The MOT rules for classic cars in the UK depend on the age and status of the vehicle. According to the government website, you do not need to get an MOT if:

The vehicle was built or first registered more than 40 years ago.

No ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years, for example replacing the chassis, body, axles, or engine to change the way the vehicle works.

However, your vehicle must still be safe to drive, and you may wish to voluntarily undertake an MOT test anyway.

You can also apply for a vehicle tax exemption if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1983.

Different criteria may apply to large vehicles, kit cars, reconstructed classic vehicles, and kit conversions. You can read more about the MOT exemption criteria and the definition of ‘substantial changes’ on the government website.
